One day whilst living in Kent, I was chiselling on of my sculptures outdoors when somebody whom I only knew from a distance came closer, he stood still, watched me for a while and then asked: why do you do all this hard work and what is the purpose?
I tried to explain the excitement, the passion and the utter joy one can experience by simply using one’s eyes. I noticed how he shook his head slowly from side to side, so I carried on working and he left.
I could have told him that our senses should not only be used for simple everyday functions this being the reason we are different to animals or that a handful of buttercups and green grass are something that a cow eats and doesn’t admire. I could also have told him that paintings, sculptures, music and poetry all help to make life happier, more interesting and more worth living for, but he was gone.
